What this calculator does
Tipping maths is simple but rarely convenient. The bill arrives, it is 86.40, service was good, there are five of you, and somebody is already doing sums on a napkin. Meanwhile the rate you should leave depends on the country you are in and whether service is already included.
This calculator does the whole job at once: the tip, the new total, and the per-person share. Tap a common percentage or type your own, then choose whether to round up so everyone can pay in round numbers. It works in a dozen currencies, and remembers which one you chose for next time.
How to use it

The formula
tip = bill × (tip% ÷ 100)
total = bill + tip
each = total ÷ number of people
Round the total up: total = ceil(total), tip = total − bill
Round each share up: each = ceil(total ÷ people), total = each × people
Rounding always goes up, never down, so the server is never short-changed by the convenience.

Frequently asked questions
It depends entirely on where you are. In the United States 18–20% is the current norm for sit-down restaurant service, with 15% now read as mild disappointment. In the UK and much of Europe 10–12.5% is generous and often already added as a service charge. In Japan tipping can cause genuine offence. In the Gulf, a 10% service charge is commonly on the bill already, and rounding up is a normal extra.
Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the technically correct approach, since tax is not part of the service. In practice most people tip on the total because it is easier and the difference is small — on a $100 bill with 8% tax, tipping 20% post-tax costs $1.60 more. Enter whichever figure you prefer as the bill total.
“Round the total up” lifts the final amount to the next whole unit of currency, adding the difference to the tip. “Round each person's share up” rounds what each individual pays, which is handier when several people are paying cash. Both only ever round upward, and the result shows the effective tip rate so you can see the real percentage you left.
No. A service charge is added by the restaurant and appears on the bill; a tip is discretionary and comes from you. In many countries a service charge does not reach the staff in full, or at all. If you see 10% service already added and you want the server to get more, a small cash tip handed over directly is the surest route.
This calculator splits evenly, which is the right answer most of the time and much faster than itemising. When one person had three courses and another had a salad, the fair approach is to work out each person's share of the pre-tip subtotal, then apply the same tip percentage to each. Doing the subtotals in the first field one person at a time works well for that.
