What this calculator does

A course grade is rarely a simple average. Homework might be worth 20%, the midterm 30% and the final 50% — so an outstanding homework score can matter far less than it feels like it should. Most students discover this the week before the exam, which is exactly the wrong time.

This calculator handles all three of the questions that come up. Add your marked work with its weights to see where you actually stand. Convert raw points into a percentage and a letter grade. And, most usefully, work backwards from the grade you want to the score the final exam has to deliver — including telling you honestly when the target is already out of reach.

How to use it

  1. On the Weighted grade tab, type each assignment with the score you got and what it is worth. Rows are pre-filled with a typical homework / midterm / final split.
  2. Leave the score empty for anything not yet marked. The calculator ignores it and tells you how much of the course has been graded so far.
  3. Use Points earned for a single test where you just want 42/50 turned into a percentage and letter grade.
  4. Use Final exam needed to work backwards: put in your current grade, your target, and what the final is worth.

The formula

Weighted grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight) Score needed on the final: needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w where w = the final's weight as a decimal (40% → 0.4)

If needed comes out above 100 the target cannot be reached from the final alone. If it comes out at or below zero you have already secured the grade.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

A simple average treats every item as equally important. A weighted grade multiplies each score by how much that item counts, adds those up, and divides by the total weight. If your final is worth half the course, it pulls your grade twice as hard as a midterm worth a quarter. Almost every syllabus uses weighting, so the simple average is usually the wrong number.
